For Archives & Civil Registries

Birth, marriage, death registers — digitized and searchable

Civil status records are the most-requested holdings in many archives. Genealogists, notaries, and citizens need daily access — but handwritten entries spanning 200 years of script changes make manual indexing impossible at scale. Transkribus reads these registers with AI and turns every name, date, and place into searchable data.

5How often did I think of you
6I wished your graceful form to view

Access restrictions

Handling protection periods (Sperrfristen) for recent records

Civil status records are subject to statutory protection periods in many jurisdictions — 110 years for birth registers, 80 years for marriage registers, and 30 years for death registers under German law (Personenstandsgesetz). Transkribus separates transcription from publication: you can digitize all your holdings now and release them selectively as protection periods expire. Per-volume access control supports rolling release strategies, internal-only staff access, and restricted modes for notaries or public authorities.
Transcribe all registers now — publish only what is legally permitted
Per-volume access control: public, restricted, or internal-only
Rolling release aligned with §5 PStG timelines
Internal search for staff to answer enquiries on restricted volumes
