What is READ-COOP?

READ-COOP SCE is a European Cooperative Society founded in 2019 in Innsbruck, Austria. We develop and maintain Transkribus, the leading AI-powered platform for handwritten text recognition.

As a cooperative, we are owned by our members — universities, archives, libraries, and individuals across more than 35 countries. Every profit is reinvested into our mission, not distributed to shareholders.

Our platform covers the entire workflow of making historical documents accessible: from scanning and AI-assisted transcription to search, annotation, and online publication.

We believe the written heritage of humanity should be accessible to everyone — not locked away in unreadable manuscripts.

Why we are here

Dear friends, Transkribians, Members,

We could have chosen an easier, more profitable path—treated text recognition as just another business case. Let’s talk about why we haven’t. Why do we believe in the future of the past? Why are we doing this as a cooperative and not a “normal”, profit-oriented company?

Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. We are here to unlock the past.

Our Values

The principles that guide everything we do

Community and collaboration

We believe collaboration with the digital heritage and scholarly communities is the most effective way of building the tools they require.

Purpose over profit

We are a mission-driven cooperative — any profit is fed directly back to our work and our community, not to shareholders.

Open access and impact

We support the public's right to information by making historical documents accessible and providing scholarships for educational and non-profit projects.

A complete toolkit

We provide a full range of tools to help users at every step, from scanning and processing to publishing and searching historical sources.

Sustainable innovation

We are committed to ensuring that our technological advancements, especially in AI, are environmentally responsible — using 100% renewable energy for our data centres.

Flexibility and adaptation

We aim to build flexible tools that can quickly adapt to new technologies and community needs.
