A Nação, The Nation, was how Portuguese Jewish communities in the Early Modern period referred to themselves. Taking our inspiration from this, A Nação Hebraica undertakes scholarly research into the history and genealogies of the communities that make up the Western Sephardic diaspora in the Atlantic world.
Our aim is to identify and make available original source documents, materials and research, and to publish these in databases or physical publications, in order to inform and educate a worldwide public.
Our transcriptions began with the earliest Annual Accounts of the Spanish & Portuguese Jews’ Congregation in London beginning in 5436 (1676) and have continued with other documents from the Bevis Marks Archives, including Ascamot, Minute Books, and Books of Disputes. Transcriptions of documents from other communities including Amsterdam, Livorno, and Gibraltar are being added as they are completed.
